Conference: Mysteries of Ancient China. New Discoveries from the Ancient
Dynasties.
This conference, organised jointly by the British Museum and The Times
Higher Education Supplement, will be held from the afternoon of Friday,
December 6, to Sunday, December 8, in the Lecture Theatre of the British
Museum.
The conference accompanies the exhibition Mysteries of Ancient China.
New Discoveries from the Early Dynasties which will take place in galleries
28, 1 and 2, the British Museum, from September 13 1996 to January 5 1997.
The exhibition will exhibit the most important archaeological finds of
the last two decades. These include a hitherto unknown bronze culture in
western China, dating to about 1200 BC, and finds from the tomb of a marquis,
who died in 433 BC, and was buried with twenty-one young women and a large
number of jades, bronzes and ceramic models that reveal the Chinese preoccupation
with the afterlife.
Scholars from China, the USA and Europe will discuss some of the exciting
topics brought to light by this recent archaeological work. In particular
early Chinese warfare, writing and religion will be considered. Many ancient
texts have been discovered in early tombs and on the basis of these some
speakers will consider aspects of law, religion and medicine. Early Chinese
technology is always of abiding interest and some scholars will be discussing
ceramic, metallurgy and textile technology.
Admission will be by advance registration only. Attendance is restricted
to 150 delegates.
Speakers and Discussants will include:
